Winter time in the Upper Peninsula

Rain before snow

November 28, 2024

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is getting a much-needed boost in water levels with this rain, and it's great to hear that the rivers are flowing high and bringing in some fresh fish. The combination of rising waters and new fish entering the system is perfect for anglers, especially with steelhead and late lake-run browns around.

Egg patterns are definitely a must-have for steelhead anglers, as they can be especially effective when fish are targeting eggs during their spawn. Nymphs and indicators for those who prefer that approach is spot on too—stones, hex, and caddis are always good choices, and they match up well with the natural hatches. As for swinging flies, a great selection of baitfish patterns, grapefruit leeches, and hobo speys to keep things interesting. Confidence patterns are key to success, as you know your setup will get results when you trust it.

The trout bite is still holding up well even in the colder months. A well-presented nymph or slow, deep streamer with an occasional strip is the way to go, especially when water temperatures are low. It’s a good reminder that winter fishing can still be productive, and it might even come with the added bonus of fewer crowds on the river. Best of luck with your fishing adventures!
